Hideki Kamiya, renowned game director behind titles like Devil May Cry and the original Okami, has launched Clovers Inc., a new studio, and announced a highly anticipated Okami sequel. This follows his departure from PlatinumGames after a two-decade tenure.
A Long-Awaited Return
Kamiya's desire to create an Okami sequel, stemming from his belief the original's narrative was incomplete, is finally realized. He previously expressed his frustration at Capcom's lack of interest in developing a sequel, even jokingly recounting his pleas to the company. This new project, published by Capcom, marks a significant personal achievement.
Clovers Inc.: A New Beginning
Clovers Inc., a joint venture with former PlatinumGames colleague Kento Koyama, pays homage to Clover Studio, the developer of the original Okami and Viewtiful Joe. Kamiya emphasizes a shared creative vision as the core of the studio, prioritizing passion and a strong creative core over sheer size. The studio currently employs 25 people, with plans for gradual expansion. Many team members are former PlatinumGames employees who followed Kamiya and Koyama, reflecting a shared creative philosophy.
Departure from PlatinumGames
Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames, where he held key leadership roles, surprised many. He alludes to internal disagreements regarding game development philosophy as the reason for his departure, stating that a divergence in creative vision led to his decision. Despite this, he expresses immense excitement for the Okami sequel and the collaborative spirit of Clovers Inc.
