Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unconventional feature: the ability to function as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this mode by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
This intriguing possibility stems from Vietnamese customs data obtained by Famiboards user LiC, who previously uncovered information related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has been a rich vein of Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended for "game console handles." The "mouse soles" designation, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, hints at the potential mouse functionality.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they represent unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not Nintendo's First Rodeo: Lenovo Legion GO Precedent
While a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not entirely unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this functionality in its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to improve its gliding action.
The Legion GO also shares another rumored Switch 2 feature: magnetic rails for attaching controllers. This similarity provides further context for the potential design direction of Nintendo's next hybrid console.
