Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat Now Requires Phone Verification

Author : Gabriella May 27,2025

If you're planning to dive into the social features of the Nintendo Switch 2, be prepared for a quick setup process for GameChat. This new video calling software, integrated into every Nintendo Switch 2 console, is highlighted as a pivotal feature of the system. However, to access GameChat, you'll need to verify your identity by providing a phone number. If your Nintendo Account already has a linked phone number, you can use that; otherwise, you'll need to submit a new one. Nintendo will then send a text message to that number, effectively linking your GameChat activities to it.

It's important to note that if you're under 16, GameChat will be inaccessible until a parent or guardian enables it via the Parental Controls smart device app. They'll also need to verify their own phone number through a text message. According to information spotted by Eurogamer on Nintendo's website, it appears that this verification process will be required for all Nintendo Account users on the Switch 2, even if the console is shared among multiple users. IGN has reached out to Nintendo for further clarification on this policy.

Using GameChat is straightforward—simply press the new 'C' button on the Switch 2 controllers to initiate a video or audio call. Up to four players can engage in video chats, while up to 24 can join a group audio call. During a video call, you can broadcast yourself using a separately sold camera peripheral, and also stream your current gameplay. This marks Nintendo's first foray into such services, catching up with other console makers in enhancing their online capabilities.

Last week, Digital Foundry unveiled the final specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2 and highlighted concerns regarding the GameChat feature's impact on system resources. Developers reportedly have access to a GameChat testing tool provided by Nintendo, which simulates the API latency and L3 cache misses that GameChat incurs. This tool allows developers to test their games without needing an active GameChat session, raising questions about how GameChat might affect game performance. Digital Foundry noted, "We'll be interested to see how GameChat may (or may not) impact game performance as this does seem to be an area of developer concern." We'll have a clearer picture when the Switch 2 launches on June 5.

Remember, GameChat will be free for the first 10 months after the Switch 2's release. After March 31, 2026, using GameChat will require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Recently, we've also seen the first look at a Switch 2 game cartridge and heard rumors that Samsung is interested in providing OLED screens for a potential Switch 2 upgrade.
