Nintendo Delays Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility Update

Author : Sophia Jan 14,2026

Limited Run Games has requested that Nintendo halt sales of the Gex Trilogy on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop until there is clear information regarding a patch to resolve backwards compatibility issues.

In a social media statement, Limited Run explained that the patch's approval has been delayed, partly due to a recent US public holiday, and is not expected this week. As an interim measure, the publisher has asked Nintendo to remove the game from the digital storefront.

The company noted that several of its titles originally launched for the first Switch have encountered backwards compatibility problems on the Switch 2. While a recent firmware update from Nintendo improved performance for most affected games, the Gex Trilogy continues to experience issues. A patch developed to address these problems is still awaiting approval for release.

"Since the timeline for a firmware fix remains uncertain, we submitted our own corrective patch last week," Limited Run stated. "Approval processes were delayed by the Juneteenth holiday, but we anticipate releasing the patch early next week.

"In the interim, we have requested that Nintendo remove the game from the Switch 2 eShop. We appreciate your patience as we collaborate with Nintendo to resolve these matters."

Players are encouraged to verify whether other Limited Run games now function correctly on the new hardware. A list of relevant titles includes:

The Gex Trilogy bundles all three platforming adventures featuring the wisecracking gecko: Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. The collection launched on June 16 for PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series, and previous-generation consoles. The original Gex debuted in 1995 for the 3DO, with subsequent ports to the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and PC. Sequels followed in 1998 and 1999, but publisher Square Enix has not released new entries since, generating significant anticipation for this remaster.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has enjoyed a robust start, selling 3.5 million units, though an analysis of its launch week sales indicates varied performance for third-party titles not developed by Nintendo.
