Why NIKKE Players Felt Let Down by the Evangelion Crossover Event

Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. Let's examine what went wrong with this August 2024 crossover event.

The Collaboration's Shortcomings:

Shift Up acknowledges several flaws. While Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato appeared in costumes faithful to their original designs, this failed to excite players. The initial designs, created collaboratively by Shift Up and the NIKKE team, were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators, necessitating alterations. The resulting toned-down versions, while acceptable to the licensors, lacked the appeal needed to resonate with the fanbase.

Player Feedback and Concerns:

The issue wasn't solely the costumes. Players found limited-time characters and costumes lacking incentive, particularly when the skins offered minimal visual distinction. Asuka's premium gacha skin, for instance, bore too close a resemblance to her standard model, deterring potential buyers.

Goddess of Victory: NIKKE's success hinges on its distinctive style of over-the-top anime characters and engaging narrative. Recent collaborations, however, have diluted this identity, leading players to perceive them as underwhelming. The Evangelion event, in particular, felt drawn-out and lacked inspired design.

Shift Up assures players that feedback is being considered for future events. Hopefully, this translates into a renewed focus on delivering high-quality content.

Both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store. Instead of further lackluster crossovers, we anticipate Shift Up will course-correct and deliver more compelling content in the coming months.
