MultiVersus is confirmed to be shutting down following its upcoming fifth season. Here’s everything you need to know about Season 5 and what happens to the game after its closure.
Warner Bros. Games Announces MultiVersus Shutdown
Season 5 Marks the Game’s Final Season
On January 31, 2025, the official MultiVersus Twitter (X) account announced that the game will permanently shut down on May 30, 2025, following its fifth and final season. In a blog post, Player First Games and Warner Bros. stated, "Our next season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."
Season 5 begins on February 4, 2025, and runs until May 30, 2025. It will introduce two new playable characters: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. According to the blog, "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." After Season 5 concludes, the game will no longer be available for download on PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or the Epic Games Store.
No official reason has been given for the shutdown.
Continuing With MultiVersus’ Offline Mode

After Season 5 ends, players can still access MultiVersus offline "via the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends." To do this, players must download the latest version of the game during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST to May 30 at 9 AM PDT.
Upon logging in, the game will create a local save file linked to the player’s PlayStation Network, Microsoft, Steam, or Epic Games account. This save will allow players to continue offline with all earned and purchased content.
MultiVersus also halted all real-money transactions on January 31, 2025. This means Gleamium, the game's premium currency, can no longer be purchased. Any remaining Gleamium can be used to unlock in-game content until Season 5 ends.
A Look Back at MultiVersus’ Journey

MultiVersus launched into public beta in July 2022, offering a free-to-play team-based fighting game often compared to Super Smash Bros. The open beta, which ran until June 2023, included multiple updates and two full seasons of content. The game was relaunched in May 2024 with new features like additional characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, and new currencies.
Despite the improvements, the game continued to face player criticism over technical problems, frequent disconnections, and its microtransaction model. Reports in July 2024 indicated a 70% drop in player count on PlayStation consoles.
MultiVersus, which will have featured 35 playable characters from various franchises, will officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
The game remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
