Simu Liu, the star of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is attempting to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively "working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen."
This news comes as a surprise, as the adaptation, originally announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, was reportedly scrapped earlier this month. Yen himself confirmed the cancellation, citing years of work and investment, ultimately frustrated by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Liu's involvement breathes new life into the project. The original Sleeping Dogs video game, released in 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, garnered critical acclaim, receiving an 8/10 rating from IGN. The game follows undercover detective Wei Shen as he navigates the treacherous world of Hong Kong's Triad gangs. Despite its popularity, no sequels were ever produced. Whether Liu's efforts will successfully secure the rights and bring the Sleeping Dogs film to fruition remains to be seen.
