Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling new game on Android called MageTrain, a fast-paced pixel art 'snakelike' roguelike that will feel familiar if you've played Nimble Quest. Drawing heavy inspiration from Nimble Quest, MageTrain combines elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into a unique gaming experience.
What’s MageTrain Like?
In MageTrain, you command a line of heroes that trail behind you, reminiscent of a snake. As you navigate through arenas, each hero automatically attacks enemies. Your role is crucial in managing the positioning of your heroes within the train, as their abilities vary based on their placement. Whether leading the charge or supporting from the rear, strategic placement is key to success.
At launch, MageTrain offers nine distinct heroes, including one who uniquely throws birds. Each hero brings different skills to the table, depending on their position in the line-up. The game features eight diverse dungeons, 28 types of enemies, and 30 skills to enhance your team's capabilities. Along the way, you'll gather gold and power-ups to bolster your progress.
Thanks to its roguelike nature, each run in MageTrain is unique. You'll navigate branching paths, make strategic choices for upgrades, and aim to survive as long as possible. This structure echoes games like Slay the Spire or FTL, where levels are not fixed, and there's no option to save your progress mid-run. A single mistake, whether crashing into an obstacle or being overwhelmed by foes, means starting over.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
The excitement of MageTrain lies in the continuous improvement you experience with each run, even when you don't succeed. You'll learn when to play defensively, when to launch an all-out attack, and when to simply hold on for another 30 seconds.
MageTrain is now available for free on Android. Dive into the action by downloading it from the Google Play Store.
