What Are Legendary Sumi-E in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Legendary Sumi-E are unique ancient paintings of animals that you can create with either Naoe or Yasuke while exploring the wilds. A painting icon will appear on your compass and map when you're close to these elusive subjects. To capture them, crouch and stealthily approach these animals. Once near, hold L2/LT to complete the painting. However, legendary Sumi-E are not marked on the map, making them challenging to locate. There are five legendary Sumi-E in total, and their availability depends on the season.

All Legendary Sumi-E Locations in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Legendary Tanuki – Summer, Daytime

To find the Legendary Tanuki Sumi-E, travel to the Omi region during summer daytime. Head to the Shimmering Fields, specifically the Shigaraki Hamlet. Once there, you'll notice Tanuki statues scattered around. Follow the path upward to a clearing where the legendary Tanuki will be roaming. Approach it slowly and complete the painting.
Legendary Grey Heron – Winter, Daytime

The Grey Heron can be found in Wakasa, in the Lake Suigetsu area, during winter daytime. Navigate to the cluster of islands west of Lake Suigetsu. Approach cautiously without riding too quickly. Dismount at a distance, walk to the marked area, and stealthily approach the heron to complete your Sumi-E.
Legendary Macaque – All seasons, Nighttime

Head to the Yamashiro region, specifically the Little Leaf Glade sub-region, and locate the Sarumaru Shrine near the mountains. Visit at night, climb the stairs to the top, and you'll find the three wise monkeys ready for your Sumi-E.
Legendary Silver Fox – Autumn, Nighttime

The legendary Silver Fox Sumi-E can be found at night during Autumn in the Kii region, specifically the Nakahechi Route sub-region. At the Kamimisu Inari Shrine, surrounded by fox statues, you'll find this creature at the cliff’s edge. Approach and capture it with your painting.
Legendary Deer – Spring, Nighttime

Travel to the Yamato region and head to the Yoshino sub-region. The nearest fast-travel point is the Mountain Blossom Temple to the west. Follow the path east to reach Sakura Meadows. Ascend the slopes to a clearing where you'll find the legendary Deer waiting to be added to your Sumi-E collection.
Keep in mind that even if you're at the right location during the correct time, there's a chance the animals might not appear. If this happens, try fast-traveling to a nearby point and returning to see if they spawn. With persistence, you'll complete your collection and unlock the A Rare Occurrence trophy and achievement.
