Exciting news for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the gritty streets of Hell's Kitchen: Jon Bernthal's iconic portrayal of the Punisher is set to return in a thrilling new Marvel special following the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. This standalone special, styled after the success of the Guardians of the Galaxy holiday specials, promises a unique blend of action and emotion, described by Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, as "a shotgun blast of a story" filled with the pathos that defines Frank Castle's character.
Adding to the anticipation, Bernthal will co-write this Marvel special with acclaimed director Reinaldo Marcus Green, known for his work on We Own This City. Their collaboration is expected to bring a fresh yet faithful take on the Punisher's journey, further enriching the Marvel tapestry.

This announcement comes as Marvel Television gears up to bring back the Defenders on Disney+. This street-level superhero team, featuring Matt Murdock's Daredevil, Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter's Luke Cage, and Finn Jones' Iron Fist, is set to reignite the gritty, grounded storytelling that captivated audiences on Netflix before their transition to Disney+ and integration into the MCU canon.
Brad Winderbaum shared his enthusiasm with Entertainment Weekly, saying, "It’s certainly exciting to be able to play in that sandbox. Obviously, we don’t have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book, where if you can draw it, you can do it. We’re dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring."
Daredevil: Born Again, set to release on March 4, continues the saga that originated on Netflix, bringing back familiar faces such as the Punisher and Vincent D'Onofrio's menacing Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin. The series will introduce a new threat in the form of the artistically inclined serial killer, Muse, adding a chilling layer to the ongoing narrative.
