Harrison Ford, the iconic actor behind Indiana Jones, has expressed his approval of Troy Baker's portrayal of the beloved character in the video game "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle." In a conversation with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Ford humorously remarked, "You don’t need artificial intelligence to steal my soul. You can already do it for nickels and dimes with good ideas and talent." He praised Baker, known for his role in "The Last of Us," for his brilliant performance, emphasizing that no AI was needed to achieve such a compelling rendition of Indy.
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" was released in December and is considered an authentic, though not necessarily canonical, addition to the long-standing series. This release came shortly after the 2023 film "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which did not fare well with audiences. In contrast, the game has been well-received, suggesting that the franchise's creators might consider shifting focus to video games rather than continuing with Ford's portrayal.
Ford, who has also starred in the Star Wars saga and is set to appear in Marvel projects, joins a chorus of creatives who are critical of AI's use in media. Directors like Tim Burton have described AI-generated art as "very disturbing," while Nicolas Cage has called it a "dead end." The concerns extend to the voice acting community, with actors like Ned Luke from "Grand Theft Auto 5" and Doug Cockle from "The Witcher" voicing their apprehensions. Luke criticized a chatbot for using his voice without permission, and Cockle warned that while AI is "inevitable," it is also "dangerous" and could rob voice actors of their income.
