The highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a significant creative restructuring. Several key producers have departed, leading to a complete reboot of the project. Read on for details on the departures and the future plans of Sony and Amazon.
God of War TV Series: A Creative Reset
The Show is Not Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have exited the God of War TV series adaptation. Despite reportedly completing multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
Key figures remaining on board as executive producers include Santa Monica Studio's Cory Barlog, PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Vertigo's Roy Lee, and Santa Monica Studio's Yumi Yang. Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to redefine the series' direction. Crucially, the project remains uncancelled.
Despite Setbacks, the Future Remains Bright
Initially announced on a PlayStation podcast in 2022, following the success of the 2018 God of War reboot, the Amazon and Sony collaboration aims to bring the acclaimed video game franchise to the small screen. This project falls under Sony's broader strategy of adapting its popular game franchises into film and television, a strategy that led to the formation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. This initiative also includes a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, among other projects.
Other successful adaptations already released include Naughty Dog's Uncharted (2022) and the critically acclaimed The Last of Us (2023), with a second season slated for 2025. Furthermore, the Gran Turismo film (2023) and the Twisted Metal TV series (2024) have also been released. Currently in development are adaptations of Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film, set for release on April 25, 2025.
