The CEO of Genki, Eddie Tsai, has unveiled intriguing details about the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, confirming several speculations. The excitement around this new console has been building for months, and the latest revelation came during CES 2025. Genki, known for its innovative handheld gaming gadgets like the popular PocketPro controller, brought a 3D-printed mockup of the Switch 2 to the event.
The mockup served as a preview for the accessories Genki is developing for the new console. During private sessions at CES, attendees got a hands-on look at this detailed replica, which Genki claims was based on a Switch 2 obtained through the black market. The model closely mimics the expected design of the Switch 2, featuring a larger size reminiscent of Valve's Steam Deck, magnetic Joy-Con controllers, an additional USB-C port, and a new button labeled "C."
In an exclusive interview with The Verge, Genki CEO Eddie Tsai shed light on some of the new features. He confirmed that the Joy-Con on the Switch 2 are indeed magnetic, specifically the SL and SR buttons. These can be detached from the console with a large button that releases a pin to break the magnetic connection. Despite the change from the original Switch's sliding rails to magnets, Tsai assured that the Joy-Con remain securely attached during gameplay.
Genki Shares Additional Details About the Switch 2
Tsai also revealed other insights about the Switch 2. Each Joy-Con features a "mounting channel" with an optical sensor, hinting at potential new uses, such as functioning as a mouse when paired with a new attachment possibly connected via the magnetic SL and SR buttons. Recent online leaks of Switch 2 images seem to corroborate this, showing what appear to be optical sensors on the Joy-Con.
Another notable detail is the Switch 2's thickness. Despite its increased dimensions, it remains slim enough to fit into the current Nintendo Switch dock. However, specific indentations on the Switch 2 mean it won't be compatible with the existing dock. As for the mysterious "C" button and the additional USB-C port, Genki admits they are still unsure of their purposes.
