The F-Zero series, a futuristic racing phenomenon, first debuted in Japan over 30 years ago (1990) and quickly gained recognition for its innovative gameplay and impressive visuals, pushing the boundaries of gaming technology for its time. The series' influence is undeniable, inspiring other racing franchises like SEGA's Daytona USA. Known for its breakneck speed, F-Zero remains a landmark title in retro console racing.
Like the popular Mario Kart series, F-Zero challenges players to navigate challenging tracks, overcome obstacles, and outmaneuver opponents in intense, machine-to-machine combat. The series' iconic protagonist, Captain Falcon, even makes appearances in the Super Smash Bros. franchise.
F-Zero: GP Legend first launched in 2003 in Japan, followed by a global release in 2004. F-Zero Climax, released in Japan in 2004, has remained a region-exclusive title until now—marking a 19-year wait for international players. In a past interview, F-Zero designer Takaya Imamura cited the immense popularity of Mario Kart as a contributing factor to the F-Zero series' extended hiatus.With the October 2024 update to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack, subscribers will finally get to experience both F-Zero Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend.
