Choosing the right gaming keyboard is more about personal preference than simply picking the best gaming mouse or best gaming headset. Factors like keyboard layout (tenkeyless or full-sized), mechanical switches, and extra features all depend on individual taste. Even with personal preferences in mind, several key performance aspects deserve careful consideration before investing in a potentially expensive purchase. Understanding a keyboard's capabilities is crucial, and this guide highlights the important features of my favorite keyboards.
Fortunately, I've extensively tested numerous keyboards, including many recent releases. All recommendations stem from firsthand experience, ensuring I can vouch for each keyboard's performance. I'll delve into how each keyboard's switches perform in competitive gaming and during extended typing sessions—construction significantly impacts the typing feel. While features like Razer's Command Dial or the SteelSeries OLED control panel are attractive additions, their reliance on software is a factor to consider for highly customizable keyboards. Even seemingly minor details like keycaps affect performance. Gaming keyboards have many nuances, and my reviews and this guide aim to help you make an informed decision.

Given the diverse keyboard styles, I've categorized my recommendations. This allows me to highlight multiple products from various manufacturers—preventing an overemphasis on my current favorite, the SteelSeries Apex Pro. Each keyboard excels in specific areas and may better suit your needs. For instance, my previous favorite, the Cherry MX LP 2.1, is the top compact 60% keyboard due to its low-profile keys and lightweight design. The Logitech G515 TKL is ideal for a low-profile option, offering a small footprint without sacrificing features. The Redragon K582 Surara provides impressive quality on a budget. The SteelSeries Apex Pro, with its Hall Effect switches, OLED control panel, and robust construction, is an ideal gaming keyboard from nearly every perspective.
Product Specifications:
Connectivity: 2.4GHz (USB-C dongle), Bluetooth, or wired
Switch Type: OmniPoint 3.0 Hall Effect (linear)
Battery Life: Up to 45 hours
Size / Layout: Full (wired-only) or TKL
PROS: Hall Effect switches are customizable and feel great; OLED control panel works well; Sleek, no-nonsense design with tasteful RGB.
CONS: N/A
SteelSeries consistently impresses me with its gaming keyboards, particularly the Apex line. The 2024 refresh of the Apex Pro includes full-sized and tenkeyless models (including a wireless version). My review of the Apex Pro TKL Gen 3 revealed very little to change. From the OmniPoint 3.0 switches to the OLED control panel, it has everything I desire in a gaming keyboard. Regardless of the model, it's not flashy, but its simple design is complemented by bold keycaps and tasteful RGB. The Hall Effect switches are smooth, consistent, and satisfying. The custom actuation point (0.1mm to 4.0mm) is advantageous in competitive shooters and versatile for typing. Features like Rapid Tap, Rapid Trigger, and Protection Mode improve performance (though their usefulness varies, and Rapid Tap may be banned in some games). The OLED panel controls media, RGB lighting, actuation points, macros, and displayed information, allowing for custom profile swapping. Battery life is manageable at 45 hours. The Gen 3 SteelSeries Apex Pro is my go-to keyboard.
