Square Enix and Tencent's Potential FFXIV Mobile Game: A Closer Look
Recent reports from Niko Partners, a leading video game market research firm, suggest a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV is in the works, a joint venture between Square Enix and Tencent. This follows an NPPA (China’s National Press and Publication Administration) approval list revealing 15 games cleared for import and domestic release in China, including this unannounced FFXIV mobile title. Other notable games on the list include mobile and PC versions of Rainbow Six, and mobile games based on Marvel Snap, Marvel Rivals, and Dynasty Warriors 8.
While industry speculation points to Tencent's development of a standalone mobile MMORPG based on FFXIV, neither Square Enix nor Tencent have officially confirmed this project. Analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, citing industry sources, mentioned this possibility on X (formerly Twitter) on August 3rd.
This rumored collaboration aligns with Square Enix's stated May announcement of a multiplatform strategy for key franchises like Final Fantasy. Given Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market, this partnership would represent a strategic expansion for Square Enix into a new platform. However, until official confirmation arrives, this remains a compelling yet unverified prospect.
