Reviews & Mini-Views
Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
Konami's recent track record with classic game collections has been undeniably impressive, and the Castlevania franchise has been a particular beneficiary. The Castlevania Dominus Collection marks the third such release on modern platforms, focusing on the Nintendo DS trilogy. Developed once again by M2, this collection delivers exceptional quality, offering more than initially apparent, and potentially establishing itself as the most essential Castlevania compilation to date.
The Nintendo DS era of Castlevania holds a significant place in franchise history, with both highs and lows. Positively, the trilogy boasts unique identities, resulting in a surprisingly diverse selection. Dawn of Sorrow, a direct sequel to Aria of Sorrow, initially suffered from clunky touchscreen controls, thankfully mitigated in this release. Portrait of Ruin cleverly integrates touchscreen elements into a bonus mode, utilizing a dual-character mechanic. Order of Ecclesia significantly deviates, presenting a higher difficulty and design reminiscent of Simon's Quest. All three are strong titles, and highly recommended.
However, this trilogy also marked the culmination of Koji Igarashi's exploratory Castlevania titles, a run that began with the revitalizing Symphony of the Night. While these games are distinct, one might question if their differences stemmed from Igarashi's creative exploration or a desperate search for audience engagement. Regardless, many players felt a sense of fatigue with the formula at the time.
Interestingly, these aren't emulated games but native ports, enabling M2 to implement enhancements such as replacing Dawn of Sorrow's touchscreen controls with button presses. The display now shows the main screen, status screen, and map simultaneously. While retaining some DS-like aspects, the games are fully playable with a controller, significantly improving Dawn of Sorrow and placing it among my top five Castlevania entries.
The collection is packed with options and extras. Players can choose game regions, customize button mapping, and select control schemes. A charming credits sequence highlights unsung heroes, and a gallery showcases artwork, manuals, and box art. A music player allows for custom playlists, and each game features a comprehensive compendium. While additional screen layout options would be welcome, this is a minor quibble. The collection provides an exceptional way to experience these three fantastic games, offering incredible value for the price.
But the surprises don't end there! The notoriously difficult arcade title, Haunted Castle, is included. This game, previously absent from the first collection, is now available alongside a complete remake, Haunted Castle Revisited. M2 has essentially created a new, improved version of the original, retaining its core elements while significantly enhancing gameplay. This is a remarkable addition to an already impressive package.
Castlevania fans should absolutely purchase the Castlevania Dominus Collection. It includes a fantastic new game and presents the three Nintendo DS titles in optimal form. The original Haunted Castle is also included. If you don't enjoy Castlevania, well, we can't be friends. And if you're unfamiliar with the series, start with this and the other collections – you're in for a treat. Another stellar collaboration between Konami and M2.

Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn ($19.99)
My experience with Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn has been a mixed bag. I've generally enjoyed Tengo Project's previous releases, but this 8-bit remake presented some unique challenges. The original game isn't as strong as their other titles, and my initial expectations were tempered. However, a preview at Tokyo Game Show reignited my enthusiasm.
After completing the game multiple times, my opinion lies somewhere in the middle. Compared to Tengo Project's other work, Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn feels less polished. However, the improvements are significant, including enhanced visuals, a refined weapon system, and differentiated playable characters. It's undoubtedly superior to the original while preserving its essence. Fans of the original will adore this remake.
For those who found the original merely decent, this remake won't drastically alter that perception. The simultaneous access to both the chain and sword is a welcome improvement, and the sword is more useful. The new inventory system adds depth. The presentation is excellent, masking its 8-bit origins. However, there are some challenging difficulty spikes, making it more difficult than the original. It's the best version of Shadow of the Ninja, but it's still Shadow of the Ninja.
Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn is another solid effort from Tengo Project, representing a substantial improvement over its predecessor. Its appeal depends heavily on one's feelings towards the original. Newcomers will find an enjoyable but not essential action game, retaining a distinct 8-bit aesthetic.

Pinball FX – The Princess Bride Pinball ($5.49)
A quick look at the latest Pinball FX DLC, following a major update that significantly improves the Switch experience. Two new tables were released: The Princess Bride Pinball and Goat Simulator Pinball. The Princess Bride Pinball features voice clips and video clips from the movie, a welcome inclusion. Mechanically, it's well-designed, authentic to the license, and enjoyable for score-attacking.
Zen Studios occasionally misses the mark with licensed tables, but The Princess Bride Pinball excels, offering a satisfying experience for both newcomers and veterans. While not the most innovative, its familiar design choices enhance its appeal.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Pinball FX – Goat Simulator Pinball ($5.49)
Goat Simulator Pinball embraces its source material's absurdity. This unique table is distinctly video game-centric, incorporating silly goat-related events and ball effects. Initially bewildering, it becomes rewarding with persistence. More suited for veteran players, it may prove challenging for Goat Simulator fans unfamiliar with pinball.
Goat Simulator Pinball is another strong DLC offering from Zen Studios, showcasing their willingness to experiment. It's a challenging but ultimately rewarding table, offering wacky antics for dedicated players.

Bakeru ($39.99)
As detailed in yesterday's review, this 3D platformer from Good-Feel is a charming and breezy experience. Play as Bakeru, a tanuki on a mission to save Japan. Battle enemies, discover hidden trivia, collect souvenirs, and enjoy humorous moments. Note that the Switch version suffers from inconsistent framerate.
Holyhunt ($4.99)
A top-down arena twin-stick shooter described as an 8-bit homage. The gameplay involves shooting, dashing, acquiring new weapons, and battling bosses.
Shashingo: Learn Japanese with Photography ($20.00)
A language-learning game where players take photos and learn Japanese vocabulary. While not typically covered, its unique approach warrants mention.
