The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a long-awaited feature that fans have been requesting for over a decade: subclasses. This addition is set to revolutionize gameplay, offering players a fresh way to engage with the game's expansive world. In this article, we'll delve into how subclasses work, explore upcoming seasonal content, and highlight the new 2025 Content Pass and Premium Edition.

Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines

As ESO marks its 10th Anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios unveiled exciting updates during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. The highlight was the introduction of subclasses, a feature fans have been clamoring for. In traditional MMOs, new skill trees often require starting anew, which can be frustrating. With subclasses, players can now mix and match skill lines without needing to create a new character.

To access this feature, players must reach level 50. They can then retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others with any of the other six classes. This system opens up over 3000 combinations, enabling players to tailor their playstyle precisely to their preferences.

Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new feature, noting that despite potential increases in Power Levels, the team is satisfied with the balance achieved through extensive testing.

Seasons of the Worm Cult

ZeniMax Online is shifting towards seasonal content, a move that Studio Director Matt Firor believes will allow for more experimental releases and better responsiveness to player feedback. "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems," Firor stated, emphasizing the goal of enhancing the game's variety and storytelling.

The upcoming chapter, "Seasons of the Worm Cult," continues the saga from the original Molag Bal storyline, introducing the Isle of Solstice. Here, players will delve into the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath mentioned that while this season will span most of the year, future seasons will be shorter, lasting 3 to 6 months. ZeniMax also plans "remix" seasons, revisiting past narratives like a teased Dark Brotherhood-themed season.
