FromSoftware has recently unveiled additional details about their upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, highlighting how the collaboration with Nintendo has influenced the game's style and character design. The game's trailer, showcased during the Switch 2 Direct, concluded with an intriguing image of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, sparking curiosity among fans. This character, it turns out, is the new hub companion for The Duskbloods.
In an interview with Nintendo, director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that this winged rat serves a role similar to the fire keepers in the Dark Souls series, staying in the hub area to offer players advice and guidance. Miyazaki noted, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership." When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," he elaborated, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers have traditionally been pivotal to players' journeys, providing not just guidance but also the power needed to progress. Characters like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll have become familiar touchstones in FromSoftware's games. With The Duskbloods introducing a PvPvE element, it will be interesting to see what specific advice and guidance this winged rat companion will provide.
Miyazaki hinted at the game's innovative approach, stating that the team at FromSoft has been exploring "a lot of new and interesting ideas." Fans can look forward to these surprises when The Duskbloods launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
