Dragon Quest III: Tips for HD-2D Remake Adventurers

For fans of classic JRPGs, Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake is a nostalgic trip back to the series' roots. However, its old-school challenge requires strategic planning. Here are some tips to aid your quest against Baramos.

Master the Personality Test

The game opens with a personality quiz administered by "She Who Watches Over All." This quiz determines your hero's stats, significantly impacting gameplay. While you can alter personality with specific accessories, restarting and retaking the quiz for your preferred stats is simpler. The optimal personality is "Vamp," exclusive to female heroes.

Customize Your Party

In Aliahan, Patty's Party Planning Place initially seems the obvious choice. However, bypass Patty and head upstairs. The second-floor NPC lets you create a custom party, including classes Patty omits. Even if you use Patty's suggestions, the second floor allows stat allocation and personality adjustments, creating superior party members. Crucially, always select a Priest for essential healing magic.

Acquire the Boomerang and Thorn Whip

Early-game equipment is costly, so acquiring powerful weapons is key. Prioritize the Boomerang (found in Dreamer's Tower, third floor) and Thorn Whip (obtained in Aliahan's well by trading two Mini Medals to Morgan Minimann). Four Mini Medals are readily available early on (two in Aliahan, two in Dreamer's Tower). These weapons excel by attacking multiple enemies simultaneously, making them ideal for your Hero and a strength-based character (Warrior or Martial Artist).

Take Direct Party Control

While often overlooked, many RPGs restrict party control to AI. Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake allows you to switch your party's behavior to "Follow Orders" via the in-combat Tactics menu. This seemingly small detail significantly enhances battle management.

Stock Up on Chimaera Wings

Early enemies can inflict devastating damage. Fast travel is unavailable until acquiring the Zoom spell (around level 8). Until then, keep Chimaera Wings handy for quick travel between previously visited locations, even within dungeons. At only 25 gold each, they're a worthwhile investment for protecting weakened party members.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
