"Dishonored 2 Receives Unexpected Update 9 Years Post-Launch"

Summary

  • Dishonored 2 unexpectedly received a small update for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
  • The patch is quite small and appears to include bug fixes and language updates.
  • Arkane Lyon is currently working on Marvel's Blade.

Dishonored 2, one of the most celebrated Bethesda titles from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 era, has been treated to an unexpected update across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. Released towards the end of 2016, the game continued the legacy of its 2012 predecessor by introducing a new playable character, Emily Kaldwin. Fans particularly loved missions like The Clockwork Mansion and A Crack in the Slab for their innovative gameplay and detailed settings.

Arkane Lyon, the developer behind Dishonored 2, also made waves with their 2021 release, Deathloop. Unfortunately, their sister studio, Arkane Austin—known for the original Dishonored, 2017's Prey, and the less successful 2023 co-op looter shooter Redfall—was part of the Xbox studio closures in 2024, which also affected Roundhouse Studios, Alpha Dog Games, and Tango Gameworks (though Tango was later revived by Krafton). Thankfully, Arkane Lyon continues to thrive and is currently focused on developing Marvel's Blade in partnership with Marvel Games.

The surprise update for Dishonored 2, which surfaced unexpectedly, is relatively minor, weighing in at just 230MB. While it seems to be primarily a bug fix and language update, the update process on Xbox requires a full reinstallation of the game's 40GB. Although the exact purpose of this update remains somewhat unclear, it's evident that it does not include the much-anticipated 60 FPS mode that fans have been eagerly awaiting.

Dishonored 2 Receives a Surprise New Update, but Not a 60 FPS Mode

The recent update for Dishonored 2 has left many fans disappointed as it does not address the performance issues they hoped for. While other Arkane titles, including the original Dishonored and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, benefit from 60 FPS capabilities on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, Dishonored 2 remains capped at 30 FPS. Speculation is rife that Arkane Lyon might consider a 60 FPS update for the game's tenth anniversary in 2026, though waiting that long for such an update might not satisfy fans' expectations.

The prospect of a third mainline Dishonored game remains a distant hope for many fans, especially with the closure of Arkane Austin, which is likely to impact the overall production timeline of new Arkane titles. Currently, Arkane Lyon is channeling their efforts into Marvel's Blade, a third-person game that has yet to announce a release window.
