Discover the Black Flame: A Guide for Monster Hunter Wilds

Author : Amelia Feb 16,2026

Monster Hunter Wilds simplifies many of the series’ traditional mechanics, reducing the need for manual tracking and tedious preparation. However, there’s still one moment that calls for a bit of old-school hunting instinct—finding the Black Flame.

How to Find the Black Flame in Monster Hunter Wilds

Around the midpoint of the main story, during Chapter 3, you’ll encounter the mysterious and fearsome Black Flame—also known as Nu Udra—lurking in the Oilwell Basin. After a brief encounter, it retreats deeper into the region, setting up your next critical objective: track it down and eliminate it.

Start by leaving Base Camp and making your way toward Zone 9, as marked on your map. Along the route, keep an eye out for tar-like tracks left behind on the ground. These are crucial clues.

When you spot them, approach and examine the tracks. Your Hunter will automatically pick up the scent, and the scoutflies will lock onto the trail. From this point forward, the path to the Black Flame is clearly marked by a glowing green trail, guiding you directly to its location.

Continue following the scoutflies through the terrain until you reach the giant flaming crater in Zone 9—the monster’s lair. Stay alert, as the final stretch may involve navigating hazardous terrain and minor environmental obstacles.

Once you arrive, prepare for battle. The Black Flame (Nu Udra) is a tentacled, fire-wielding beast capable of devastating flame-based attacks. To gain the upper hand, prioritize destroying its tentacles early in the fight. This weakens its offensive capabilities and exposes its core weak points, making it easier to deal damage and secure higher-quality materials upon completion.

Given the intense heat of the surrounding area, it’s wise to carry several Cool Drinks to prevent overheating, which can cause continuous health drain if ignored.

Now that you know how to locate and defeat the Black Flame, you're one step closer to mastering the wilds. For more Monster Hunter Wilds guides, including how to change your Palico’s language or capture elusive monsters, be sure to visit The Escapist.
