DC's upcoming film adaptation of The Authority faces challenges, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Initially announced as a major project within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the reboot of the WildStorm Universe's notoriously violent superhero team has been placed "on the back burner."

Gunn cited several factors contributing to the delays, including the evolving overall narrative and the need to differentiate The Authority from similar properties like Amazon's successful The Boys, which shares thematic and stylistic elements. The presence of established DC characters already featured in other projects further complicates the development process, requiring careful integration to maintain narrative coherence.

"Honestly, Authority's been the hardest," Gunn stated during a DC Studios presentation. "Both because of the shifting overall story and because of getting it right in a world with The Boys and a world with all the things that The Authority influenced that came out after it."

He continued, "And also having a lot of characters that we've fallen in love with that we've already filmed and have that we want to continue their stories and see them meet each other. So I will admittedly say it's a little bit more on the back burner right now."

Despite the setback, one Authority member, the technologically gifted Engineer/Angela Spica, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman: Legacy.

Other projects within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters have also encountered hurdles. Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, experienced production setbacks, while Booster Gold is progressing smoothly. Paradise Lost remains a priority, with the pilot script currently underway. The Swamp Thing film is on hold, pending the availability of director James Mangold, but its absence won't significantly impact the overarching narrative.
