Get ready for a revolutionary way to experience the iconic Civilization franchise! Sid Meier's Civilization VII (Civ VII) will make its VR debut exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. Announced on February 8th, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, this marks the first time the series ventures into virtual and mixed reality.
Dennis Shirk, Civ VII Executive Franchise Producer, expressed his enthusiasm in a 2K Games blog post: “We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!”
Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, echoed this excitement: "With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans."
Note that while Civ VII is launching on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.
Immersive Gameplay: A Board Game Brought to Life
Civ VII VR places you at a Command Table, offering a unique perspective on your empire. Zoom out for a strategic overview or lean in for detailed views of your cities and units – it's like playing a massive, interactive board game!Enjoy seamless transitions between immersive virtual reality and mixed reality modes. 2K Games describes the experience: "In virtual reality, players are transported to an ornate museum as they look out onto a vista personalized to their leader; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to its placement in a player's physical space.”
Engage in single-player campaigns, team up with friends in co-op mode, or challenge other players in competitive multiplayer matches for up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. You can also combine human and AI opponents for a varied experience. Witness your friends and rivals as their chosen world leaders across the Command Table in both VR and MR. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.
Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates
Firaxis Games is actively responding to community feedback gathered during Civ VII's early access period. Their official Twitter (X) account announced ongoing work to address reported issues. Early access began February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Edition owners. Steam reviews have highlighted UI concerns, affecting players' ability to access crucial information.
Firaxis has outlined key priorities for future updates:
- Significant UI improvements, including enhanced intuitiveness, map readability, and overall polish.
- Implementation of community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, expanded map types, and more.
- A quality-of-life update planned for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balancing, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.
