Chris Evans, the star of the Captain America films, has definitively stated that he will not be reprising his role in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise. Evans directly refuted a Deadline article claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling the report "not true."
This contradicts a statement made by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who had previously been told by his manager that Evans would be returning. However, Mackie subsequently spoke to Evans himself, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU, stating, "I’m happily retired."
While Evans did briefly return to the MCU in a comedic cameo as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a far cry from his central role as Captain America.
The MCU's future is currently somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang the Conqueror, after his assault and harassment conviction. Majors's planned role as the MCU's next Thanos was significant, and his departure has seemingly caused a shift in plans.
Marvel has since announced Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., as the new primary antagonist. This announcement fueled speculation about the return of other original Avengers, but currently, no further returns have been officially confirmed.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, has confirmed that his character will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday but will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
