Edward Berger's gripping thriller "Conclave" captivated audiences last year, offering a rare glimpse into the secretive world of Catholicism, specifically the ritualistic election of a new pope. As cardinals from around the globe prepare to engage in an actual conclave, it's evident that the influence of film can be profound. Remarkably, some of these religious leaders have turned to Berger's movie for guidance on what to expect.

A papal cleric involved in the conclave ritual shared with Politico that Berger’s film, featuring the esteemed Ralph Fiennes as the dean of the College of Cardinals, has been praised for its accuracy. The cleric noted that "some [Cardinals] have watched it in the cinema," indicating the film's impact and relevance to those about to participate in the real event.

The conclave was triggered by the death of Pope Francis in late April, just months after the film's release. Starting on Wednesday, May 7, 133 high-ranking clerics will gather in the Sistine Chapel to vote for the next leader of the global Catholic Church. Most of these cardinals were appointed by Pope Francis and have never experienced a conclave, making the film an invaluable resource, particularly for those from smaller or more remote parishes.
