Concept Art Reveals Grizzled Bruce Wayne in Canceled Batman Game

Author : Isabella Nov 12,2025

Concept art from a long-canceled Batman: Arkham Knight sequel starring Damian Wayne as the new Dark Knight has emerged online, offering our clearest look yet at an aging Bruce Wayne.

Known internally as "Project Sabbath," the game was in development at Warner Bros. Games Montreal—the studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins—following the 2015 release of Arkham Knight. The project was set to feature two Batmen: father and son.

However, Warner Bros. ultimately canceled the game. WB Games Montreal shifted its focus and later released 2022's poorly received Gotham Knights, which featured no version of Batman at all.

At the time, Project Sabbath was planned as Warner Bros.' next major Batman title, while Rocksteady explored concepts with other characters. Rocksteady eventually circled back to its version of Batman (in a way) with its ill-fated release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

New images posted on ArtStation by a former WB Games Montreal artist who worked on the project showcase a youthful Damian Wayne, a grizzled and bearded Bruce Wayne, and concept designs for Killer Croc and Huntress.

Whether this canceled entry would have been considered part of the Arkhamverse canon remains uncertain. Some of the designs—especially a dramatically altered Killer Croc—indicate it might have offered a fresh interpretation. That said, a similar redesign was used for Poison Ivy in the canon Arkhamverse title Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Additionally, WB Games Montreal's Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel, is widely accepted as canon to Rocksteady's core trilogy.

This isn't the first time concept art from the unreleased game has appeared online. In 2021, another former WB Games Montreal developer shared images of Damian Wayne in his Batsuit—a sleek design featuring a red Bat-Signal emblem on the chest.

Those earlier designs also depicted the same older, bearded Bruce Wayne, though only while fully suited—meaning his face remained hidden. Still, the concepts suggest that, at some point in the story, the retired Bruce would have suited up again as Batman.

After the launch of Gotham Knights and providing additional development support to Rocksteady on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, WB Games Montreal underwent downsizing in December 2024, resulting in nearly 100 job losses. Rocksteady's cooperative game featuring Batman's allies was a commercial failure, though the studio is reportedly now developing a new single-player Batman title.

Could this new project finally deliver the Bruce and Damian Wayne game that fans have long awaited?
