Nintendo unveiled a wealth of exciting information about the Switch 2 during its April Direct, and since then, fans in the U.S. have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to preorder this next-gen console. While the price of the Switch 2 itself didn't come as a shock, the cost of first-party games at launch raised quite a few eyebrows. Notably, the much-anticipated *Mario Kart World* is set to retail at a hefty $80. In addition, Nintendo is rolling out a new range of Switch 2 accessories, which, like the games, have seen significant price hikes compared to their original Switch counterparts. These prices have even increased since their initial announcement.
One accessory that caught my eye was the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at an astonishing $85. As someone who already owns several original Switch Pro controllers, I was relieved to learn from a Nintendo developer interview that these existing controllers will be compatible with the Switch 2, sparing me the expense of an upgrade.

While some gamers might opt for the new Switch 2 Pro controller, it's worth noting that it's not essential for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can stick with it and save $80 to spend on new titles. For those planning to buy the Switch 2 but not yet owning a Pro controller, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable choice at $69.99.
Be aware, however, that stocks of these older controllers might run out as the Switch 2 launch approaches, making way for the new model. Amazon, for example, currently has limited stock and is mostly offering third-party alternatives. Alongside the compatibility of the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will also work with the Switch 2, although we generally recommend the Switch Pro controller for a better gaming experience in most games.
When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?
If the new Switch 2 Pro controller is the only accessory you're eager to get, you'll need to wait until the console's launch day on June 5. Preorders for the Switch 2, and likely its accessories, including the Switch 2 Pro controller, will begin on April 24. Keep in mind, however, that the Switch 2 Pro controller is exclusively compatible with the Switch 2 and cannot be used with the original Switch.
Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller have already appeared at Walmart and Best Buy, although no preorder dates are specified yet. Walmart also features listings for upcoming Switch 2 games that will soon be available for preorder.
