Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role. While the series will focus on a new Slayer, Gellar's involvement is rumored to be in a recurring capacity.
Adding star power behind the camera, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (known for Nomadland and Eternals) is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not participating.
Whedon's absence follows previous allegations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center around a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's return as Buffy.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces.
