"Breakout Beyond: A Fresh Twist on Atari's Classic"

Author : Connor Apr 23,2025

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to make a comeback with a fresh twist in "Breakout Beyond." Developed by Choice Provisions, the studio renowned for the BIT.TRIP series, this modern take on Atari's classic brick-breaker game maintains the traditional paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique sideways progression. Players will navigate through the game from left to right, focusing on breaking bricks and achieving higher combos, which are visually enhanced with more intense lights and effects as the gameplay progresses.

Adding to the excitement, special bricks in Breakout Beyond can trigger spectacular effects, such as massive explosions and even a laser cannon. The game promises a robust lineup of 72 levels, and for those looking to test their skills further, there's an unlockable endless mode complete with a global leaderboard. Additionally, players can enjoy the game with a friend through local two-player co-op, making it a great option for those who prefer not to break bricks solo.

Originally slated to be an exclusive title for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond took a different path when Atari stepped in to acquire and complete its development. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 launch, has yet to hit the market due to numerous delays and challenges. Last year, Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision, though not the Amico itself.

Breakout Beyond is scheduled to launch later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS, ensuring a wide audience can experience this innovative take on a classic game.
