Following the launches of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, several key figures from CD Projekt RED departed to pursue independent ventures. One such project is The Blood of Dawnwalker, developed by Rebel Wolves, a studio founded by a CD Projekt RED veteran.
The recently announced The Blood of Dawnwalker represents a significant departure. Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, a key figure in the project, detailed his reasons for leaving CDPR:
The core motivation was the desire to create something innovative with close friends, leading to the formation of Rebel Wolves. While sharing a deep appreciation for RPGs and their history, we felt the genre's conventions could be significantly expanded. Our ideas were ambitious and unconventional. Securing a large corporation's buy-in for such radical changes, particularly with fresh intellectual property, proved unrealistic. Therefore, establishing our own studio became the only viable path to realizing our vision.
This innovative approach inherently carries risk. However, the smaller team structure at Rebel Wolves fosters a unique collaborative environment. Unlike larger studios, communication and shared vision are streamlined, allowing for a more agile and creatively fulfilling process. This close-knit atmosphere facilitates a stronger sense of shared creative energy and allows for the easier development of truly unique game mechanics.
