Zach Cregger, renowned for directing the acclaimed horror film Barbarian and being part of the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids You Know, is now set to helm a reboot of the iconic Resident Evil franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a fierce bidding war is underway for the distribution rights to Cregger's vision of the classic Capcom survival horror series. Cregger will not only direct but also write the screenplay for this eagerly anticipated reboot. The competition for distribution includes heavyweights like Netflix and Warner Bros., among four other studios.

Cregger's directorial prowess was evident in Barbarian, a 2022 horror film that captivated audiences with its chilling narrative about a woman who uncovers a terrifying secret in a rental house. His upcoming project, Weapons, has reportedly received stellar feedback from test audiences, further solidifying his reputation in the horror genre.

PlayThis new *Resident Evil* reboot marks the second attempt to bring the franchise back to the screen. Previously, Paul W.S. Anderson directed a series of six films starring Milla Jovovich, which, despite deviating from the source material, amassed a staggering $1.2 billion worldwide. In 2021, Johannes Roberts' *Welcome to Raccoon City* aimed to stay truer to the games but struggled to reach the quality of Capcom's original series.

Constantin Film, the production company behind both Anderson's films and Welcome to Raccoon City, will collaborate with PlayStation Productions on this latest reboot. Established in 2019 by Sony, PlayStation Productions has been instrumental in adapting games into films and series, including Uncharted starring Tom Holland, Gran Turismo, the The Last of Us TV series, and Twisted Metal.

Looking ahead, PlayStation Productions has an exciting slate of projects in development, such as Until Dawn, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, Gravity Rush, Helldivers, Horizon Zero Dawn, and a sequel to Uncharted. Additionally, fans can anticipate a God of War TV series and a recently announced Ghost of Tsushima anime series.
