In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions awaits you near the story's end: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle him. After obtaining the Orphic Hammer in the House of Hope, you'll face this choice, significantly impacting your destiny.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before deciding Orpheus' fate, you must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin by exploring Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries immense weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. Prepare for challenging interactions requiring a 30 roll to influence their choices.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the ending of Baldur's Gate 3.

Should You Free Orpheus?

This decision hinges on your desired playthrough. Early in Act 3, the Emperor warns that Orpheus' imprisonment prevents your party's illithid transformation. Freeing him risks this fate for one or more party members. After the Netherbrain battle, within the Astral Prism, you choose: free Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor: This ends Orpheus' life as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While defeating the Netherbrain becomes easier, this outcome might disappoint fans of these characters.

Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. Again, party members risk becoming Mind Flayers. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. Interestingly, if asked, he'll willingly become a Mind Flayer to save his people.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid illithid transformation, but free Orpheus if you're willing to risk it for your companions. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus. The decision rests solely on your preference.

The Moral High Ground?

This depends on your moral compass, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him, while others might find Voss and Lae'zel's demands excessive. The Gith prioritize themselves, even when influencing the wider world.

The Emperor is generally benevolent, aiming to stop the Netherbrain and aid your party. He acknowledges necessary sacrifices. Following his plan risks illithid transformation, but ensures moral uprightness (even as a squid!). Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can lead to favorable outcomes for everyone.
