Matajuegos has exciting news for gamers: their critically acclaimed surrealist documentary game, Atuel, is set to launch on PC and Android later this year. The game's Steam page is now live, allowing eager players to pre-register ahead of its release. Fans can also anticipate its arrival on Google Play soon.
This indie sensation from Argentina, originally launched on itch.io in September 2022, quickly captured the gaming community's attention with its innovative mix of documentary storytelling, experimental gameplay, and breathtaking, dreamlike visuals. Atuel's unique approach earned it the 'Innovation in Experience Design Award' at IndieCade 2022, alongside numerous other accolades. The game has been showcased at prestigious events like the Marché du Film at Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Curious about what Atuel offers? Take a peek at the trailer below.
What Do You Do in Atuel, the Documentary Game?
Atuel immerses players in the stunning Atuel River Valley of Argentina, a region grappling with the effects of climate change. Rather than a traditional game, Atuel offers an immersive experience where players shapeshift into various animals and elements of the ecosystem, becoming one with the landscape. One moment you could be gliding through the sky as a bird, and the next, you might be flowing as the river itself.
The game also features real-life interviews with historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents. These interviews delve into the history of the region, its current challenges, and the looming future influenced by climate change. Matajuegos teamed up with the international documentary team, The 12.01 Project, to weave these compelling stories into the game. The visuals, inspired by the Cuyo desert, create an almost otherworldly atmosphere that sets Atuel apart.
While you await the Android pre-registration, you can visit the Steam page or the official website for more information. Upon its mobile release, Atuel will feature localization in seven additional languages and full controller support.
