Amazon's ambitious venture into adapting the acclaimed video game series, God of War, into a television format is already making waves even before its premiere. The series, which has been greenlit for two seasons, is under the stewardship of the renowned showrunner Ronald D. Moore. Moore stepped in to lead the project following the exit of the previous showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. In a recent chat with Katee Sackhoff, a fellow alum from the iconic series Battlestar Galactica, Moore shared insights into his new project.
"Right now, I'm working on an adaptation of, there's a video game called God of War, a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they've asked me to come in," Moore explained. "So I'm literally in the writer's room, and working on that. That's my new thing." Despite admitting that he's not a seasoned gamer, Moore humorously recounted his struggles with modern gaming controllers, mentioning classics like Defender, Asteroids, and Centipede as his preferred games. His light-hearted take on gaming challenges, such as figuring out which button is R1, adds a personal touch to his transition into the world of God of War.
Moore's role extends beyond just writing; he serves as both executive producer and showrunner for the God of War series. His extensive experience in television, highlighted by his work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and the 2000s Battlestar Galactica, positions him well to bring this epic saga to life. Despite the departure of some original team members, Sony's Cory Barlog remains involved as an executive producer, ensuring continuity and fidelity to the game's narrative.
The series is set to be based on the 2018 installment of God of War, promising to delve deep into its rich storytelling and mythological elements. Amazon's track record with video game adaptations, such as the successful renewals of the Fallout TV show and Secret Level, suggests high hopes for God of War's reception on their streaming platform.
