Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist

The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, is generating buzz with its striking resemblance to Hades, both aesthetically and in its core gameplay loop. However, Rogue Loops introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart from its inspiration. While a firm release date remains elusive, a free Steam demo offers a compelling preview of this intriguing title, slated for a PC release in early 2025.

The roguelike genre continues its reign of popularity, with developers constantly innovating on the formula. Games like Returnal exemplify the genre's versatility, while Hades and its sequel (currently in early access) represent the classic dungeon-crawling experience that Rogue Loops clearly emulates.

Rogue Loops features a repeating dungeon, randomly generated loot, and ability upgrades, all viewed from a top-down perspective. But the game's distinctive feature is its ability upgrade system: each upgrade comes with a significant downside, potentially altering the entire gameplay experience.

This mechanic echoes the Chaos Gates in Hades, which offer powerful upgrades at the cost of temporary debuffs. In Rogue Loops, however, these "curses" are more persistent and impactful, potentially lasting the entire run, adding a layer of strategic depth to each playthrough.

The narrative centers on a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five distinct dungeon floors, battling unique enemies and bosses. As with most roguelikes, each run unlocks procedurally generated upgrades, enabling players to craft personalized builds using both beneficial and detrimental effects.

While a precise release date remains unconfirmed, Rogue Loops is expected to launch on Steam in the first quarter of 2025. In the meantime, players can experience the first floor via the free demo. Other compelling roguelikes, such as Dead Cells and Hades 2, provide ample entertainment until Rogue Loops' official launch.
